6. Site of George Washington Ellis Home, 219 Spring. Ellis (1875-1919), author and diplomat, lived here as a child. The son of George and Amanda Jane Ellis, he had to leave Weston to attend school after 8th grade. Ellis was among the first Black graduates of the University of Kansas School of Law in the late 1890s. He became a U.S. diplomat and esteemed author, writing against eugenics and other racial superiority theories. He died in Chicago where he had a law practice.
